yes. i lied. take me back, won't you?
i had every intention of doing something along the lines of electronica, but it wasn't coming together. so, i opted for the much safer route of an a cappella song. good idea, julia. i think it's kind of boring without accompaniment. that said, it is an exercise in melodic construction. i often come up with very different things without an instrument in my hand and i am rarely brave enough to try it. some of you may know my song "poison" evolved this way. that is one of my favorites to play now. i feel like it's still alive perhaps because it stood on its own for so long that any additional instrumentation sounds so massive and lush.
i have been spending way too much time with this new song to even know if i like it anymore. sometimes that happens with friends, but lately, for me, it's only been happening with songs. those are the only lucky winners of my attention, albeit in intervals.
dislikes: tempo is a little too slow without accompaniment. chorus is a little anticlimactic.
likes: lyrics resound with me because i know exactly what i am saying. i am still not good at letting you know my meaning, but hopefully you can take something from it. some lines are exactly how i feel and it feels completely truthful to sing them. sorry for the obscurity. the ambience is kind of cool kind of cheesy but i'm putting it under the likes for now. hey, person this is about, do you know this is about you? don't answer that. coolest word in here: unearth (literal meaning is "to bring to light" and rhymes with aperture. fitting for the metaphor).
have you ever felt like someone might actually be a camera? that they might perceive the world with such accuracy, yet see its idiosyncrasies, see its beauty in whimsical flashes that elude the human eye? it is scary to stand in front of those people, those loving, forgiving people and let them see you for what you really are and let them love you if they want to, if there's room for you. that is all. VAGUE.
julia: vocals, guitar percussion, ambient noise
i'll look you
i'll look you
my eyes, afternoon light, slant away, down and shy.
your soul, a light scribe, a camera, heart benign.
but you've captives to keep.
exposures you've vowed to set free.
and so they are
as far as they know.
you send me up to the north,
your five o'clock shadow growing tall.
our time, growing short. goodnight day unmerciful,
but you've got me tucked in
your arms. vision gets dim.
i fall in
and out
of focus.
you've been pouring over your past,
those ancient photographs.
i can hear it when your voice trails off real low
the dark isn't much to look at on its own.
you're a patient man with some kind of steady hand,
but lately, you sleep through the day, heavy with the weight of chance.
square in the aperture
i'll look you. i will unearth
if there's room,
if you're set,
if i am.
you've been pouring over your past
those ancient photographs
i can hear it when your voice trails off real low
the dark isn't much to look at on its own
the dark isn't much to look at on your own.
thank you thank you thank you. by they way, i am open to suggestions for styles of songs, themes, lyrics, metaphors, instrumentation etc. i would love you to help me stretch my mind and heart.

Wow Julia. These lyrics seem like your most focused yet. (no camera pun intended). It shows that you know what you want to say, and vague enough for us to relate. I like the imagery, lyrical Chiaroscuro!
Nice use of panning in the backing vocals, cool effect. You wanna send me an mp3 of this?
since you asked for suggestions:
I wanna hear you get a little crazy. not goofy, but maybe a little angry, or a lot of angry! I think it would be good for you. I think you should take a big risk on one of these next ones. With serious crash and burn potential.
I know, me talking about taking big risks. Well lay off, just do it.
Liked it a lot! I enjoyed the chorus a lot (and the effects). I actually just made Matt a "Love CD" for Valentines and thought of sending you one of the songs just for your interest, or maybe for inspiration if you find it inspiring. When we were in Houston we were bored one weekend and went to a restaurant in an old barn called "Dosie Doe's". Very cool environment. I guess they host a lot of up and coming and some well-known artists. To our delight, we discovered the band "Crooked Still" there. I will send you one of their songs. I love the simplicity of the chorus and kind of story telling in the lyrics. Um... that's all.
Love it julia! sounds great. i can agree with Ranger, i do want to hear you get really angry. not neccesarily on this song, just on another one. throw down some mean blues or something. and if you ever need banjo, mandolin, or accordion, im your man.
i planned to listen to this while looking up my next homework assignment but as soon as you started singing, my mind/body/soul could only do one thing: attend you/this song's idea and purpose. oh, julia. you've done it again. i love love love this. you are musical brilliance. and ps how in the world can you stay on pitch for over 3 minutes acapella? awesome.
