paved calm

i passed the city lights
off 362
found myself 10 miles down
where there was solid solitude,
just two headlights and a rear view
a crooning voice to keep me company.
the dark, the illusionist, turns foreign to this heart,
something in me said "just see how far you can go
just you and this car."
but reluctantly i glided off the paved calm,
to turn myself around.
south.
10 more miles didn't feel the same.
there was weight inside them.
responsibility behind them.
but the crooning voice
made perfect noise
the kind that says
"let me carry that."
